Built in 1881 and opening in 1882 the Opera House, initially called Fulton Hall, served as both a farmers market as well as a concert hall.  In 1927 the Opera house was renovated and became a movie house named the Capitol Theater and ran until April 27th of 1959.

The building was subsequently used as a warehouse until it was was taken over by the Mauch Chunk Historical Society to once again be used for musical and theatrical shows.  There are reports of paranormal activity occurring within the Mauch Chunk Opera House which included the sounds of applause coming from empty rooms, hearing a piano being played with nobody sitting at the piano, as well as reports of a woman in the balcony. There was at least one noted death during construction. Another piece of interesting history is that it
was also found in researching that back in 1763 there was a jail named Lancaster Jail which held 14 Conestoga Indians as inmates  in which the there was a mob  known as the “Paxton Boys”  who broke into the jail and captured and killed the Indians.  It was noted in the report that in 1881 a portion of Fulton Hall was built where the Lancaster Jail was located.  It is reported that if standing within the section of the Opera House built atop where the Lancaster Jail was once located one may be able to still hear the screams from the Indians.
Our investigation:
This was the 2nd time CPEAR has been to the Opera house. We brought a 3 man team and all of our equipment this time for the investigation. This also gave us a chance to try out Chucks new Tri-field meter.
It was around 7pm when we officially started investigating the Opera house. We started on the main stage, where right away we were getting spikes on our KII meter. It seemed to be answering direct questions and had intelligence to it. We quickly brought out the tri-field EMF meter and were getting many hits and responses with that as well. Please see the video below.
During our time on stage, we heard a noise coming from the upper balcany. We had asked for what ever was there to make that noise again. Right after we asked, it sounded as if someone was moving around up there, almost like heavy footsteps or rustling. We quickly ran up there to see if someone else had gotten into the building. There was nobody there. We were alone.
The night started off very active, very early. After exploring the sounds we were hearing, it got very quiet. What we thought was going to be a very active night, turned out to be quiet the remainder of the night. Near 1am in the morning, Chuck had thought he heard the sound of footsteps on the 2nd floor above us. He went upstairs to check it out and found nothing.
One thing we did discover is in the utility room in the back, there is a large hole in the floor covered by a piece of plywood. In the hole was a ton of rushing water. We were not sure if this was the storm drain system or an underground river. In any case, it is a theory that running water is can feed paranormal activity. It could be the energy it creates and the spirits may be feeding off that energy.
Please check out the video below for our experiences on the main stage.
