Whitehall Mansion - Built in 1771
42 Whitehall Ave
Mystic, CT 6355
860-572-7280

The old historic bed & breakfast has its fare share of claims of activity. It also has a lot of history as well.

There is a rumor that the house use to be part of the underground railroad. There is a secrete room in the attic beneath the floor where runaway slaves would hide out. Some of these slaves are buried in the cemetery across the street in Whitehall Burial grounds.

Dr. Dudley Woodbridge  had the house built in 1771. Dr. Woodbridge lived in the home with his wife Sarah and their nine children - Lucy, Benjamin , Charlotte Samuel, William, Elizabeth , Joseph, and Dudley Jr.

As the children got older, most married and moved away, except for Lucy. Lucy was the only Woodbridge child who never got married and decided to stay in the home with Benjamin, who passed away in the home at the age of twelve. Dr. Dudley Woodbridge died October 4th 1790.  His wife Sarah died six years later in 1796.

There are many people that say that Lucy and Benjamin still remain in the home today. Lucy seems to be the spirit that is talked about most within the home.

All your classic paranormal occurrences have been reported within the home. Strange sounds, footsteps, objects moving, doors opening on there own, the feeling of being watched or not alone.

The House is now used as a bed & breakfast. There are several journals in the home that people have written in sharing their experiences.

Our investigation:

We stayed the entire night at Whitehall mansion with a team of 10. We took turns investigating the mansions in small groups while other members of our team investigated the Whitehall cemetery nearby.

It was actually a very quiet night. Nobody had any personal experiences, nor did we catch any kinda evidence.

We did find that the floors in the home were not level in many areas and this would cause doors to swing on their own if opened or not shut all the way. It could also cause a fun house effect to the point someone might feel uneasy or off balance and possibly light headed. Shadows cast by the cars going by on the main road could also be seen on the walls at times in the home. Also, if the heat comes on during the winter, the pipes tend to make noises.

Could this be what people are hearing, feeling, and seeing? Its possible. The place certainly has the age and history for some spirits to be lingering around. It's hard to say what the many people have experienced that have stayed the night here and have written about in the journals. Unfortunately, we couldn't come up with any evidence on this night to back up any of the claims.
